I am passionate about engagement and empowerment, and I thrive on elevating others and reminding them of their greatness. I believe we each have a purpose and that purpose permeates all that we do and all that we are.
The following is one of my favorite examples about empowerment and shows how a small gesture can make a lasting impact.
A few months ago, I was sitting in a café with a couple of my colleagues and we were talking about challenges we were facing—how to grow, how to navigate the myriad of interactions we have on a daily basis, how to push outside our comfort zones. We made a pact to support each other, to encourage one another, to be sounding boards, to provide feedback and solutions, and to be positive influencers. I then asked if either of them had ever had Trader Joe’s Sweet Sriracha Uncured Bacon Jerky (they hadn’t), and their eyes widened as I shared how unexpected the bacon is—spicy yet sweet, a seemingly unfamiliar combination with all the right flavors, and slightly addicting. Walking home later, I reflected on the conversation and how to be a positive influencer.
The next morning they discovered on their desks a pack of the Trader Joe’s Sweet Sriracha Uncured Bacon Jerky along with a post-it note:
The bacon jerky was curiously examined, tentatively tried, and then immediately approved of and finished within minutes. They enjoyed the gesture and were appreciative of the thoughtfulness.
The true gift, however, was to me and happened months later. I noticed when walking by their desks that they both still had the post-it notes up on their walls. When I asked one of them about it, he said “yeah, whenever I’m having a tough day, I read that note and it gives me the boost to keep going and be a badass.”
You never, ever know the impact you can have on others. We have opportunities every day to create a positive impact, to uplift those around us, to remind them of the greatness that they are. It can be as simple as an email, a kind remark, or being fully present (which often times isn’t quite so simple!). It involves taking the time to give them positive insight, to encourage their mindset and attitude, or to acknowledge how they handled something. Choose to focus on the good others bring to their environments and how their presence positively impacts you! This creates positive, generative energy that impacts not only your relationship but in turn their interactions with others and their environments (and you’ll feel a sense of goodwill as well).
This is a practice that can be shared with people in all areas of your life—peers, friends, the vendors we work with (Maple Ridge Farms does a fantastic example of this!), the clients we work with on a daily basis, the people in all the different departments that we sometimes overlook…even the leaders of the companies that we work for. Be bold. Be unexpected. Be Badass. Be you.
Make it a point this week to choose someone in your company to acknowledge and uplift!
