A ship without a rudder will aimlessly bob up and down in the water and has very little chance to reach its destination in one piece.
While many salespeople in the promotional products industry are knowledgeable, active, and conscientious about their jobs, too many of them are, in effect, rudderless ships. They don’t have a rudder – the critical piece of a ship that allows focused movement towards safe harbor. These are the people you know that are constantly “busy” but never seem to accomplish anything of real substance.
In order to get to any destination, you have to first know one thing: the destination itself. This is the rudder to your ship.
It’s not about setting goals, although that can provide an excellent roadmap to your destination. It’s really about knowing what your destination is in the first place. It may be $1M in sales or $400,000 in gross profit. It might even be finally landing that dream account. But before you create your roadmap (goals), you have to know your destination.
If you’ve been stuck bobbing aimlessly in a sea of mediocre sales, stop and take some time to think about where you want to land. By setting and understanding your destination, you place the rudder back on your ship and you can begin navigating with a purpose rather than hoping you’ll land in at a harbor of success.
