Walloping Webslingers, I’m kind of jazzed to do this ‘guest shot’ on the brandivate blog because I’m writing about two subjects that are near and dear to my heart – Promotional Products and Marvel Super Heroes!
Back in 2012, Marvel Studios released ‘The Avengers’ featuring TOGETHER for the very first time on the big screen – Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, The Mighty Thor, Black Widow, Nick Fury and Agent Coulson of SHIELD and Hawkeye the Archer. It was an adrenaline-charged BLAST of epic adventure that was funny, exciting, suspenseful and ended what Marvel called Phase One of their cinematic plan. The film, directed by the great Joss Whedon, went on to gross a STUNNING $1.5 Billion worldwide and is the 3rd Highest Grossing Film of all time, just behind Avatar and Titanic. With the first sequel, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” due tomorrow as the finale of Phase Two, get ready for a fresh wave of Marvel Mania to sweep the country.
And it got me to thinkin’… with so many different types of suppliers, distributorships, sales personalities and approaches in our promotional products industry, if you could match your style with that of an Avenger… which one would that be, or better yet, which one would you ASPIRE to be and how could you learn and grow from that comparative? Well, face front, true believers! That’s exactly what we’re going to do…
Nick Fury – dangerous, doesn’t follow the rules, myopic thinking. Only got one eye, that pretty much lets him out.
The Hulk – always angry, but the most powerful being ever, anywhere. Loses his temper with devastating results and gets the job done but with much collateral damage.
Iron Man – Snarky, brilliant, creative, seductive, a multi-tasker – CREATES or REINVENTS every job but hurts feelings with bluntness
Thor – has a massive ego, thinks of him/herself as God-like. Uses proprietary tools (magic hammer) to get the job done but alienates many around
Hawkeye – Quiet, precise, good team player, hits the target – can he get the job done on his own or is he a smaller cog in a bigger wheel?
Captain America – colorful, strong, honest, a survivor, patriotic, positive thinking, fully in charge and capable of leading anyone to accomplish anything yet very humble. A true LEADER.
Black Widow – mysterious, surprising, always underestimated which leads to success. Can blend in anywhere and handle any situation but has a troubled past that can color her actions. That said, is Black Widow the Avenger to aspire to?
If we ascribe these traits to the various components of a promotional products company, this whole exercise suddenly comes into focus:
Nick Fury is Ownership
The Hulk is Human Resources
Iron Man is Marketing
Thor is Sales
Hawkeye is Sales Support
Captain America is Operations
Black Widow is hot...I mean Accounting
Think about approaching your day today in the guise of an Avenger and see what buildings you can scale, what heights you can hit and which customers you can come to the rescue of. You CAN be a Super Hero… it’s just a state of mind!
