I Don't Want to Write this Blog

So, why am I?

You read that right – I really don’t want to write this blog at all for one simple reason: I’m tired of being grumpy, angry, and, as I was told this week, crotchety. I don’t know if it’s the fact I’m tired of being cooped up in a house 95% of the time, if the continual negativity of the news cycle is beating me down, or if I’m just tired of the “wash, rinse, repeat” of life right now. What I do know is my most recent blogs have had a decidedly more acerbic tone to them. For example, in the last six weeks I’ve used the following blog titles:

Not that I don’t like what I wrote in those blogs; I do, and I stand by every cantankerous word, phrase, and paragraph. I think it’s because writing – the one thing that has always given me solace – has done the exact opposite recently. Oh, I can point the finger at any number of things that, even though they are factual, are also quite negative which only perpetuates my issue. No, the finger needs to point directly at your pal Bill here – mainly because I’m the one who decides what I write about. As such, this week, I’m deciding to write about something else.

This year has been difficult and exhausting for all of us. There isn’t one person I know who’s life hasn’t been dramatically altered by 2020, but that doesn’t mean it’s all been bad. So, for this blog, I’m going to focus on all the good things that have happened to me (so far) in 2020:

  • Everyone has remained COVID free and healthy

  • We got a new puppy and, even though she’s a handful, she’s got a sweet soul that warms our home

  • We’ve been able to make some modest additions to our backyard (the “Back Forty”) in a firepit and television making it a true place of zen

  • I’ve gone deep in my binge watching and found gems like “Nathan for You” (Hulu) and “Fleabag” (Amazon Prime)

  • Along with one of my closest friends, I was able to successfully launch a marketing/branding agency

  • I’ve been able to smoke a LOT of meat

  • I was able to take a few driving trips with just me and my boys as they continue to look at colleges – a real and unexpected treat

  • Tiger King

  • For the first time, we were able to vote as a family – even if I’m still pretty sure my kids voted for Kanye

  • I forced myself to (quietly) make some healthy lifestyle changes and I’m glad that I did

  • I discovered the greatness that is the Coca-Cola Tic Tac

Of course, there’s more – a lot more. I suppose the point of all of this is that even in the middle of the shitshow that has been 2020, there is so much good in the world if we just focus on it. As we approach Thanksgiving, maybe we can all focus on the things we are thankful for, even in this year.

I’m really glad I wrote this blog.
